W&L Welcomes New Trustees Thomas J. Sheehan ’90 and Andrew W. Tate ’98 Sheehan and Tate were sworn in as trustees on Oct. 17.
Thomas J. Sheehan ’90 and Andrew W. Tate ’98 joined the Washington and Lee University Board of Trustees on Oct. 17, at the board’s fall meeting in Lexington.
Thomas J. Sheehan ’90 graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He received his MBA in 1995 as a Dean’s Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sheehan is chair of Global Corporate and Investment Banking (GCIB) for BofA Securities, Inc., the institutional broker-dealer business of Bank of America.
Sheehan has spent his professional career in finance in the U.S. and Europe. He joined Bank of America in 2014 after spending 20 years at Morgan Stanley, and he and his family lived in London for a decade while he worked for both organizations. Before his current role at BofA, he was head of Global Healthcare Investment Banking and focused on strategic advisory and capital raising for healthcare clients. He was appointed to his current leadership role in September 2025 to focus on client strategy and leading the firm’s most critical global relationships, after serving as co-head of Global Investment Banking for the previous seven years. He is a member of Bank of America’s Management Committee and the Executive Committee of GCIB, among other roles at the bank.
As a student at W&L, Sheehan was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the Contact Committee and the Omicron Delta Epsilon international honor society for economics. As an alumnus, Sheehan has supported W&L in a variety of volunteer roles, including as a Williams School Advisory Board member, co-chair of his class’s 25th reunion and an advocate for and active recruiter of W&L students in finance. He has also served as a board trustee of the American School in London and a director of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in New York.
Sheehan and his wife, Jennifer, reside in New York City and have three children, Caroline, Tommy and Kate.
Andrew W. Tate ’98 graduated with a Bachelor of Science with special attainments in commerce. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation in 2001. Tate is a private advisor and managing director for Tate Wealth Partners at Rockefeller Global Family Office.
Tate has more than 25 years of experience in the finance industry. Before joining Rockefeller, he spent nine years at UBS Financial Services. Previously, he served as a fixed income strategist, a member of the investment committee and a leader of the institutional and retail distribution teams at Sterling Capital Management LLC. Earlier in his career, Tate worked in the debt capital markets group at Bank of America.
In addition to his finance career, Tate has served in several leadership roles on the board of trustees at Charlotte Country Day School. He is a member of the Good Fellows Club, a charitable organization focused on assisting the working poor. Tate is also active with professional golf, having served on the host committees for the 2017 PGA Championship, the 2022 Presidents Cup and the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.
As a student at W&L, Tate was a member of Kathekon and the Sigma Society, served as a Social Organization Officer for his class and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, for which he served as president. As an alumnus, Tate has supported W&L in numerous volunteer roles, including as a class agent, as a W&L Fund SPEAK volunteer and as a member and then chair of the W&L Fund Council. In addition, he was chair of his class’s 10th reunion and a member on his class’s 15th, 20th and 25th reunion committees. He currently serves on the campaign cabinet for the Leading Lives of Consequence capital campaign. Tate was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2023.
Tate lives in Charlotte, N.C., with his wife, Victoria, daughter, EC, and stepdaughter, Alaina.
