W&L’s Cecily Stern ’23 Receives Gilman Scholarship Stern will travel to South Korea this summer to study in Seoul, South Korea.
Cecily Stern ’23 has won a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in the Council on International Educational Exchange’s Summer Korean Studies program in Seoul, South Korea. At W&L, Stern is majoring in biology.
The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.
“I am incredibly honored to be named a Gilman Scholar this year,” Stern said. “I always knew I wanted to study abroad during my time as an undergraduate student, but there have been many obstacles to making that work. With the support of the Gilman Scholarship, I will be able to experience my dream of studying abroad.”
Stern works in the Student Activities office at W&L, where she assists Kelsey Goodwin, director of Student Activities. She is also a member of the pre-health professional honor society, Alpha Epsilon Delta.
After completing her studies abroad, Stern plans to apply to veterinarian schools in the fall.
The Gilman Scholarship Program, named for retired congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, seeks to diversify the kinds of students who study or intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates.
