W&L’s Jazz Ensemble to Perform Their Annual Year-End Concert The April 6 program will feature the Michael Allen Trio and several student soloists.

The Washington and Lee University Jazz Ensemble presents its annual end-of-year concert on Thursday, April 6 at 8 p.m. in Wilson Concert Hall in the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts.

The performance is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required. The event will also be streamed online at livestream.com/wlu.

The Jazz Ensemble will explore a variety of styles throughout the evening, including Duke Ellington’s early jazz standards, new pieces from contemporary trumpeter Tim Hagans, and works from the bands of Charles Mingus and Maynard Ferguson.

The student-led Michael Allen Trio will open the concert with a tribute to jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, featuring Allen ’23 on guitar, Eli Catanzaro ’25 on bass, and Tim Johns ’26 on drums.

The year-end performance will also spotlight the ensemble’s graduating members. Annalisa Waddick ‘23 will be featured on trumpet in Chuck Mangione’s “Children of Sanchez,” Gaoyuan “Alex” Qian ’23 and Sam Boyd ‘23 will take on Dexter Gordon’s “Cheese Cake,” Ben Slater ’23 will solo on Thad Jones’s “Groove Merchant,” and clarinetist Taylor Colaizzi ’23 will be featured in several solos throughout the concert.
