W&L’s Molly Michelmore Talks Taxes The article discusses taxation and Democratic aspirations.
Molly Michelmore, associate professor of history and head of the History Department at Washington and Lee, was recently quoted in a Vox article on taxation and Democratic aspirations.
In the article, Michelmore writes: “In the U.S., there is a real reluctance to be seen as raising taxes on the middle class or talk about raising taxes on the middle class even if hitched to really popular initiatives. I’m hard pressed to think about a moment when you have anybody who was talking openly about taxing the vast middle class as a central part of a social compact: ‘We’re going to tax you and get these things back.’”
