In the summer of 2010, Washington and Lee University will see the results of the extensive renovation of one of its signature structures, the 127-year-old Newcomb Hall. “Overall, it’s going to be that same, familiar building,” said Thomas M. Kalesky, director of design and construction at W&L, “but in a grander sense, as you would have seen back in the 1800s.”

Washington and Lee University bestowed its Distinguished Alumnus Award on three recipients: William A. Jenks, Lexington, Va., a retired W&L history professor; David H. Stovall Jr., Jacksonville, Fla., president and CEO of Stein Mart Inc.; and Russell W. Chambliss, Birmingham, Ala., president and CEO of Mason Corp.
When the Washington and Lee University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa inducted 47 members of the classes of 2008, 2009 and 2010 into the academic honor society on March 12, a former W&L faculty member was also recognized when the chapter's award for the top sophomore was named for J. Brown Goehring.
Steven W. Squyres, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University and the principal investigator of NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Project, will be the speaker at the Phi Beta Kappa/Society of the Cincinnati Convocation on Thursday, March 12.
Odell S. McGuire, a professor emeritus of geology who taught for 32 years at W&L, died today, Dec. 8, 2008, at Heritage Hall Health and Rehab Center, in Lexington. He was 81.
Shenandoah: The Washington and Lee University Review has won a prestigious Governor's Award for the Arts for 2008. Governor Timothy M. Kaine will present it to Shenandoah, which won in the category of arts organizations and artistic directors, and nine other recipients at the state capitol in Richmond on Sept. 17.
