Campus Kitchen Receives Donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation The donation will support the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program.
Campus Kitchen Coordinator Ryan Brink prepares to make snack packs for the Backpack Program.Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee (CKWL) has received $2,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed local neighbors in their time of need. The Campus Kitchen will use the gift to purchase food for CKWL’s Backpack Program. The program aims to address the meal gap experienced by children on free and reduced school lunch when they do not have access to those meals over the weekends.
“We are very grateful for the continued support of the Food Lion Feeds program,” said Ryan Brink, Campus Kitchen coordinator. “This year the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program has seen a 60% increase in the number of backpacks sent out each week, so this grant is all the more impactful.”
The Campus Kitchen Backpack Program was established in 2009 and is a weekly delivery of non-perishable breakfast and snack items to local elementary, middle and preschoolers. The program delivers food to every elementary school in Lexington City, Buena Vista City and Rockbridge County, along with a number of middle and preschools. This grant will contribute meaningful financial support, ensuring that the nutritional quality of the provided food doesn’t need to be compromised because of budget restrictions.
The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across the company’s 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants.
