The DeLaney Center at Washington and Lee University will begin its 2026-2027 Screen to Square film series at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Stackhouse Theater in Elrod Commons with a screening of the coming-of-age drama “George Washington.” The event is free and open to the public. Complimentary pizza, drinks and dessert will be provided.
This year’s Screen to Square film series will feature films and discussions exploring the theme of “Race and Southern Youthfulness.” That theme plays a central role in David Gordon Green’s “George Washington,” a drama set in an impoverished rural North Carolina town that touches on themes of economic decay and the loss of childhood innocence. Narrated by a young girl named Nasia, played by Candace Evanofski, the film follows a group of multiracial preteen friends and a crew of blue-collar railroad workers as they navigate the accidental death of a young boy in their community.
Following the screening, a panel of Lexington and Rockbridge community members and W&L faculty will lead a discussion with the audience about educational opportunities, social support and violence.
The DeLaney Center is an interdisciplinary academic forum that promotes teaching and research on race and Southern identity. Visit the DeLaney Center website for updates on further Screen to Square film screenings, DeLaney Dialogues and other programming.
