From Screen to Square Film Screening: ‘Mudbound’ The upcoming screening will be held May 11 in Stackhouse Theater.
The DeLaney Center at Washington and Lee University will continue its Screen to Square film series at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 11, with a showing of the film “Mudbound” in Stackhouse Theater located inside the Elrod Commons.
The film screening is the third in the 2025-26 series focused on the theme “Racial Adversity and Southern Resilience.” The screening is free and open to the public and includes drinks, pizza and dessert.
“Mudbound” is a 2017 historical drama adapted from Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel of the same name. Directed by Dee Rees, the film follows two World War II veterans, one white and one Black, who return home to rural Mississippi, where their families share the same land under vastly different circumstances. Both men carry the weight of war with them but find that the American South’s racism proves equally hard to escape. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including nods for Mary J. Blige for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song.
Following the screening, panelists, including members of the Rockbridge community and W&L faculty, will lead the audience in a discussion touching on war, work, affection and self-definition.
