Ehi Rajsky, assistant professor of accounting, recently secured a grant for Washington and Lee from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grant program to continue leading student-driven tax filing support for the local community.

The VITA program is an IRS-sponsored initiative that provides free basic tax return preparation to qualifying taxpayers. The program is designed to help people who might struggle to afford tax preparation navigate the filing process through the aid of IRS-trained and certified volunteers working at community sites around the country. VITA ensures that taxpayers claim valuable credits and tax deductions, which can significantly impact their refunds.

The $5,000 award enables Rajsky to continue running the VITA program at W&L, which she has provided for free through her accounting community-based learning course in which students prepare tax returns for taxpayers during the annual tax filing season. Last year, the prep site was recognized as having one of the highest return production increases, which shows the impact the students and program have on the community.

Rajsky has been a member of the W&L faculty since 2022. She earned a Bachelor of Science in architecture from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, an MBA in accounting from La Salle University and a Ph.D. in business administration with an accounting concentration from Temple University. Prior to W&L, she worked as a public accountant specializing in tax compliance for alternative investment partnerships.
