Thanks to the support of 1,125 law alumni, parents and friends, the W&L Law Fund — annual giving that supports the Washington and Lee University School of Law — raised $1,453,309 this year, achieving its $1.45 million goal. Total giving to the law school for the 2024-25 fiscal year was over $9 million in gifts, pledges, and planned gifts. This figure is among the highest ever fundraising totals in the law school’s history.

“The W&L Law community understands the importance of giving back and how investments in our students and faculty sustain our unique brand of legal education,” said Sarah Hughes, assistant dean of law school advancement. “Our close-knit community combined with an unmatched alumni network is what sets us apart from other law schools. We are grateful for the consistent and persistent support to pay it forward.”

The law school has seen tremendous fundraising success in recent years, prompting the Board of Trustees to approve a new goal of $55 million for the school for Leading Lives of Consequence: The Campaign for Washington and Lee. The school surpassed its original goal of $40 million ahead of the campaign’s public launch last fall. At the close of the 2025 fiscal year, the Law Campaign reached just over $49 million in gifts and pledges, including planned gifts.

Key to this ambitious goal is a $2.5 million gift for scholarships from an anonymous philanthropist who will match every new gift designated to Law School student scholarship endowments through the conclusion of the campaign in July 2027. Alumni and friends can also establish scholarships with a minimum gift of $100,000 or contribute to one of the school’s existing scholarships. The law school currently has 127 named scholarships.
