Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the national leadership honor society, recognized Washington and Lee alumnus Pete Abitante ’78 with its 2026 Pillar of Leadership in Athletics Award.

Abitante, who retired in 2024 after 46 years with the National Football League (NFL), received his award from ODK President and CEO Jennifer L. Waller during an Oct. 22 ceremony on campus. He was also recognized at halftime of the Generals’ football game against Hampden-Sydney on Oct. 24.

“Pete’s decades of service to the NFL and his unwavering commitment to integrity, relationship-building and the people behind the game embody the spirit of this award,” Waller said. “We are proud to recognize his remarkable career and the lasting impact of his leadership in athletics.”

Abitante’s career with the NFL began with a summer internship, and he rose through the ranks, serving with the league’s communications department from 1978 through 2006 and as special assistant to Commissioner Roger Goodell from 2006 until 2017. He then assumed a special projects role for his final seven years, leading initiatives such as the NFL’s 100th season celebration and selection of the NFL 100 All-Time Team.

During his time at the NFL, he worked with three commissioners, including Pete Rozelle, Paul Tagliabue and Goodell. His career highlights include 46 Super Bowls, the growth of the game internationally and five USO tours with players to visit U.S. service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Abitante served as the communications point person for international media requests from 1986 to 2005, coinciding with the game’s growth overseas. He oversaw 40 games in eight countries on four continents and was recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame with an Award of Excellence in 2025. The Award of Excellence honors significant contributors to the game in behind-the-scenes roles, including public relations personnel, assistant coaches, athletic trainers, equipment managers and film/video directors.

The Pillar of Leadership in Athletics Award is bestowed on ODK members who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in a role supporting athletics or sports, including as a team captain, instructor, coach or trainer. The award recognizes individuals whose professional accomplishments and commitment to service exemplify ODK values.
