Professor Toni Locy Pens Article About R.E. Lee In a piece published in The Nation, Locy asserts that General Robert E. Lee does not deserve to be associated with W&L.
Washington and Lee Journalism professor Toni Locy has published a piece in the weekly magazine The Nation about W&L’s affiliation with General Robert E. Lee.
In the piece, Locy argues that the image of Lee as a “kind slave master, noble but doomed warrior, and proponent of reconciliation between North and South after the Civil War” is a myth and an example of revisionist history. Locy also writes that Lee was not a great educator and does not deserve recognition for what W&L is today. As a result, Locy contends, the university should dissociate itself from Lee.
