Washington and Lee University will present a senior music recital on April 2 at 8 p.m. featuring Hyun Song ’21.

The performance will be streamed online at https://livestream.com/wlu. Tickets are not required.

A Johnson Scholar and a music major with an emphasis on performance, Song is also a pre-med student. She will perform selections by composers J. S. Bach, Antonín Leopold Dvořák, Dmitri Shostakovich and James Stephenson for her senior cello recital on April 2 at 8 p.m.

Anna Billias, music lecturer, will accompany Song on piano during the Dvořák and Shostakovich pieces. Song will be using a loop station, which is an electronic accompaniment device, for the Stephenson piece.

As a two-time winner of the Concerto-Aria competition at W&L, Song played Edward Elgar’s “Cello Concerto in E minor, Op.85” as a soloist at the 2019 Winter University Orchestra Concert and will play Dvořák’s “Silent Woods” as a soloist on April 5 during the University Orchestra and Wind Ensemble Concert.

“Winning both Concerto-Aria competitions gave me the unique opportunity to rehearse and perform a solo piece with orchestral accompaniment,” said Song. “While I am familiar with playing in that setting, I have learned how to lead with my sound and body language and working with the conductor as a soloist, and holistically listening to and playing with the orchestra.”

At W&L, Song has participated in the University Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble and is a past member of the University Jazz Ensemble. She has performed in multiple concerts with the University Singers, including the Winter 2020 Bentley Musical: “Considering Matthew Shepard” and the 2019 Fall Choral Concert. Song also plays with multiple chamber groups that volunteer their musical talent at nursing homes, local churches and choir programs.
