Celebrating BLSA The W&L Law chapter of the Black Law Students Association made an impact at 2023-2024 conventions.
The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at Washington and Lee University School of Law achieved notable success during the 2023-2024 academic year. Their commitment to excellence and advocacy garnered recognition at both regional and national levels.
Chapter of the Year: Mid-Atlantic NBLSA Regional Convention
At the 55th Regional Convention for the Mid-Atlantic NBLSA (MABLSA) Regional Convention, the W&L Law BLSA Chapter was named as the Chapter of the Year for the region. Their dedication to fostering a supportive community and promoting diversity within the legal profession was acknowledged during the convention held in Baltimore, MD from Feb. 14-18, 2024.
Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition Triumph
Two second-year law students, Taylor Kennedy ’25L and Sydney Roots ’25L, showcased their legal prowess in the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition at the regional convention. In recognition of their outstanding work during the competition, the team received the award for Best Petitioner Brief.
National Director of the Year: 56th National Convention
At the 56th National Convention, held in Houston, Texas from March 6-10, 2024, third-year law student Jasmine Cooper ’24L made a significant impact. Serving on the National BLSA Board as the National Director for the Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial Competition, Cooper was honored as the Director of the Year.
Top Contributor of the Year: National Convention Coordinator
Ebony Aiken ’25L, a key member of the National BLSA (NBLSA) Board, served as the National Convention Coordinator for the 56th National Convention. Her tireless efforts and strategic planning contributed to the convention’s success. At the same event, Ebony received the prestigious Top Contributor of the Year award. Under her leadership, the 2024 NBLSA Convention became the largest in the organization’s 56-year history, welcoming over 900 law students, pre-law students, attorneys, and legal professionals.
