Next month, community members and local college students can fight childhood hunger in the Rockbridge area one soup bowl at a time by attending the 14th annual Souper Bowl hosted by the Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee University (CKWL).

The event will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 1 in Evans Hall. Participating restaurants and caterers will serve a selection of soups for attendees to enjoy, with in-person dining and to-go options available. Attendees will also be serenaded by W&L student bands and a capella groups performing throughout the event.

Tickets are available in advance or at the door and can be purchased online. The cost is $15 for students and $20 for adults; children under 12 can enter for free. All proceeds benefit the Campus Kitchen’s Backpack Program, which provides non-perishable breakfast, lunch and snack items to children receiving free and reduced lunch in 15 different schools throughout Rockbridge County.

This year’s Souper Bowl participants include Blue Sky Bakery, Campus Kitchen, CHEFS Catering Company, Full Circle Catering, GloBowl Cafe, Heliotrope Brewery, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, Lexington Catering Company, Napa Thai, Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Pronto, Pure Eats, the Rockbridge Jewish Community, Seasons Café, The Georges and W&L Dining Services. The event is sponsored by Charles W. Barger & Son at the gold sponsorship level; Lexington Smiles at the silver level; and Cornerstone Bank, Lexington Women’s Club, Just Games and Violet Consignment at the bronze level.

“The Campus Kitchen Souper Bowl is always one of the highlights of the year, offering the opportunity for folks from all over the community to come together for a good cause,” said Ryan Brink ’18, assistant director of the Shepherd Program and CKWL coordinator. “We are incredibly excited for this year’s event and are so grateful to the restaurants, caterers, business and organizations that are donating in support of the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program.”

A “Souper” Addition

This year, Campus Kitchen is introducing the Souper Bowl Online Auction as a new component of the annual fundraising event. Participants can view available items and make bids online, and the auction closes at 1 p.m. on Feb. 1. Purchased items can be picked up at the Souper Bowl event; individuals unable to pick up items during the event should contact Ryan Brink to arrange an alternate pickup time. This year’s silent auction donors include Alvin-Dennis, Flex Fitness and Yonderyear Farm.
